Addictions are either physical, psychological, or frequently both physical and psychological. Regardless of the type, an addiction can be disastrous to you and to those
around you. This section discusses the major addictions. |
Drug and Alcohol addiction includes dependence on alcohol, amphetamines, cocaine, sedatives, hallucinogens, inhalants, cannabis, and a
wide variety of other substances. All
of these have in common that they cross the blood-brain barrier, alter the chemical balance of the brain, and result in behavior changes. |

Food addiction Is characterized by an obsession with, and craving for,
food and eating, a preoccupation with finding sources
of food associated with pleasure and comfort, a compulsive cycle of eating, and lack of ability to stop abusing food. |

Gambling addiction can be a devastating and affect every aspect of your life. For many people gambling is a relatively harmless
type of entertainment, but for the 4% to 6% of gamblers who become problem or compulsive gamblers, it can be a horror. |
Internet addiction is still in its infancy but is rapidly growing. Abuse of the internet can disrupt your work and personal
life in the same way as other addictions such as gambling, sexual addiction, food addiction, and drug and alcohol addiction. |
Sex Addiction and Pornography addiction are constantly reinforced by the sex and advertising industries. If you are a sex addict
you probably use denial when acting out your sexual addiction and then may have feelings of despair, shame, depression and confusion. A key factor in a sexual addiction
is its obsessive and compulsive quality. |

Spending and Shopping addictions can lead to depression, feelings of loss of control, and financial difficulties. If you suffer
from a shopping and spending addiction, you may find yourself paying whatever it takes to get whatever you want. With the easy access to credit cards and personal loans, an individual with this addiction tends to think that they can indulge whenever they
want. |
Work addiction is not the same as working hard or working overtime and feeling satisfaction from the work and the results. If you are a very
hard worker you may sit at your desk for long hours but you may still think about family, skiing, or some other activity. But if you are a workaholic, your general pattern will be that even when you are with family, on the slopes,
or engaging in almost any activity, your thoughts are still focusing on work. |
